Chapter 6

Two arms covered in shimmery white dragonskin and trimmed in faux fur wrapped around Rafe’s waist, and he leaned into his mate.

“Everything will be fine,” Aleksander whispered close to Rafe’s ear, then kissed his earlobe.

“If not, at least I got to see what you look like with silver hair,” Rafe said, sneaking a glance at Aleksander’s ghost costume. Thanks to Dra’Kaedan’s magic, Aleksander’s raven locks were a shiny silver, and it contrasted nicely with the thick layer of navy at the nape of his neck. His ensemble was identical to what Aleksander wore on the solstice, but instead of blue-black, it was white.

“Yeah, I wish I was as excited about your hair,” Aleksander grumbled. Kitchi had straightened Rafe’s curls, and Aleksander had been complaining for hours.

“I kinda like it. Pretty sure I couldn’t straighten it myself though, so I’m going back to curls as soon as this thing is over.”

Worth snuck through the magical curtain they’d set up in the throne room, separating them from the rest of the D’Vaires.

“Are we ready?” Worth asked. The Duke Argent had donned a tuxedo with a vest in his pink dragonskin. On his shoulder, Asteria wore a paisley bow that matched Worth’s tie.

“Is everyone okay?” Rafe asked.

“Besides a million questions I’m growing tired of answering, all is well,” Worth replied.

“Let’s get this started so Rafe can relax,” Dra’Kaedan insisted.

Like Rafe, the Grand Warlock had lost his signature curls, and his usual golden-blond hair was now a deep blue with thin shimmery streaks of gold. It matched his warlock true form, which he’d chosen to use as part of his costume. One half of his body was decorated in swirls of navy and gilt, and his eyes were golden orbs with dark azure pupils in the shape of dragon heads. His outfit complimented his appearance, and the long cloak that disappeared into shadowy smoke was decorated heavily in dragon skulls.

“Okay, deep breaths, here we go,” Worth said with a wink for Rafe. He whipped open the curtain and disappeared.

“This is so awesome, I can’t wait to murder someone,” Illsi enthused. The Demonic Imp’s guise was angelic, and instead of using his real wings of black and pale blue, he had a glimmery set of white ones that touched the floor.

“That’s the spirit,” Larissa said. She’d opted to play the role of a red herring to mislead their audience. Since subtlety didn’t suit their mystery, Larissa had a slick crimson dress on, and contacts to switch her normally bright orange irises to the same lush scarlet as the fascinator covering half her hair.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Worth called out from the other side of the curtain. “I hope you’re enjoying the wonderful food and drink, and casting your gaze upon our gingerbread creations. No solstice is complete without our entire family gathered, and we thank you for allowing us to change things up this year by asking you to don such gorgeous clothes for the night.”
